Robby Ameen is a New York City-based drummer who has recorded over 200 records which such artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Ruben Blades, Paul Simon, Jack Bruce, and Eddie Palmieri, as well as many of his own projects. He is also the co- author of the instructional book/cd “Funkifying the Clave: Afro-Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums,” which has sold over 40,000 copies worldwide. He is a longstanding member of the bands of Dave Valentin, Kip Hanrahan, and Ruben Blades’ Seis del Solar for which he was recently awarded a Grammy.

The drum workshops will consist of demonstrating many of the techniques, tools, and concepts needed to perform in today’s contemporary jazz scene. We will show how many musical styles – funk, rock, latin, post-bebop – all come together and are a necessary foundation for much of what is happening in today’s music. The Afro-Cuban component will be particularly emphasized, especially for its usefulness in exploring complex independence, phrasing, and rhythmically sophisticated ideas.

The ensemble workshops, open to all instruments, will incorporate a live band situation learning and performing recently recorded original music combining many contemporary elements of jazz, funk, latin and classical styles. Attention to phrasing and playing together cohesively will be combined with individual improvisation. It is the hope that the student will leave with an awareness of the importance of crossing genres, while still respecting their individual integrities, in order to create some relevant music.
