U.M.P.A. Jazz Orchestra

U.M.P.A. Jazz Orchestra All students of the jazz program (including advanced training and master classes) are required to participate in one of the jazz orchestras. It is possible to join the following orchestras: the U.M.P.A. Jazz Orchestra, which is a Big Band formation, or the Rehearsal Big Band, which is less dedicated to the actual live concert than to the development of an extensive repertoire.

Each academic year, the U.M.P.A. Jazz Orchestra realizes about three concert programs and has one or more study phases. The weekly repertoire rehearsals take place on Tuesdays from 14:30–17:30 o’clock.

Current information on dates, programs, line-ups etc. is published on the notice board of the jazz department (Gasteig: 1st floor, in front of room 1.120) as well as on the homepage. Students are obligated to read up on the current status.

Students will receive a certificate of attendance for their participation in the jazz orchestra as well as in the various ensembles. Without a certificate, an admission to the exam is not possible.

The U.M.P.A. Jazz Orchestra (concert line-up), led by Prof. Claus Reichstaller, and the various ensembles of the jazz department have the opportunity to present themselves in the concert series »Jazz in Concert« at the university’s main concert hall in Arcisstrasse, at venues outside of the university such as the jazz club Unterfahrt as well as at the annual »Jazz Night« in the Carl-Orff-Saal at Gasteig.

Jazz in its various facets – funk, Brazilian, soul, blues, original compositions and arrangements – was presented as part of the »Jazz Night« at the Gasteig: the jazz department of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich performed for an enthusiastic audience in the Carl-Orff-Saal with numerous ensembles and the U.M.P.A Jazz Orchestra (Big Band). In addition to the musically diverse and fascinating performances by the numerous lecturer-ensembles, one of the highlights was unquestionably Gregor Hübner’s composition class. Under their own direction and with the support of the U.M.P.A. Jazz Orchestra, the graduates presented their final projects. Five professional world premieres were performed, which captivatingly presented the most diverse styles, acoustic colors and rhythms to the audience. The head of the jazz department, Prof. Claus Reichstaller, presented the exceptional concert and promised that the following academic year would also produce »jazz at its finest«.
