Small Ensembles

Small Ensemble in Konzert The program offers all students the opportunity to participate in small ensembles, which specialize in different styles. A wide musical spectrum is offered, from straight-ahead, bebop, modern, free jazz, to Latin, fusion and soul.

In these ensembles, students learn, among other things, proficiency in using sheet music, how to develop an individual sound on their respective instrument, how to improvise in a specific style and, above all, how to interact within an ensemble. In addition to standard works, own compositions for the ensemble work are composed and arranged.

The ensembles perform regular concerts in order to achieve the highest level of performance practice during the course of studies. The concerts take place in the small concert hall at Gasteig or in the jazz club »Unterfahrt«. (go to events)

Jazz Orchestra

U.M.P.A. Jazz Orchestra

The Jazz Orchestra - The Big Band of the Jazz Institute of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich Artistic

Direction: Prof. Claus Reichstaller

The Jazz Orchestra has been the figurehead of the Jazz Institute of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich for several years.

In numerous concerts of the concert series "Jazz in Concert" and the traditional "Jazz Night", the top-class big band convinces with grooving sound and fiery rhythms.

Alternating programmes with guest musicians such as Joe Haider, Dusko Goykovich, Jiggs Whigham and international star guests like Patti Austin, Jane Monheit and Klaus Doldinger further enhance the Big Band's appeal.

The repertoire of the Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Claus Reichstaller covers the range of classical big band literature to modern, contemporary arrangements and compositions.

All students of the Jazz Institute (including advanced and master classes) are required to participate in one of the jazz orchestras. In addition to the Jazz Orchestra as the big band concert formation, there is the Rehersal Big Band, which is dedicated less to actual concert performance than to the development of an extensive repertoire.
