Workshop am 20. & 21. November: 

"Malagasy 12/8 Groove – From Malagasy Tradition to Jazz" with  Joisa Rakotondravohitra 

Madagascan drummer Joisa Rakotondravohitra, founder of the Aponga Music and Drum School in Antananarivo, invites students to a unique rhythm workshop exploring the 12/8 groove of Madagascar and its connection to jazz and improvisation.

Through hands-on practice with percussion, and ensemble work, participants will experience how traditional Malagasy rhythms can be adapted into contemporary musical contexts. The workshop focuses on rhythmic awareness, body coordination, ensemble interaction, and the creative use of polyrhythms such as 4 against 3.

Schedule:

  • Thursday, November 20
    • 10:00 – 12:00– Introduction to Malagasy Rhythm
    • 13:00 – 15:00– Practical Application
      (open to all students)
  • Friday, November 21
    • from 10:00– Advanced Malagasy Rhythm(for drum students only)

This workshop is open to students of all instruments and levels and offers inspiring insights into the rich rhythmic traditions of Madagascar.
